Broad Reach to Margaret Bay
Sunny. NE SW 10-15 Kts.
There wasn't a lot of wind when I arrived at Trouper II so decided to go fishing. Although before I left my buoy, the marine weather was broadcasting 12 Knt winds at Trial Island so the thought of sailing was growing like a weed in the back of my mind.
40 minutes later I was trolling on the flats, just South of Great Chain Island. There was indeed a lovely wind on Juan De Fuca straight. Fishing lasted all of 40 minutes before I ditched the rod and down rigger, and hoisted full sail. Reaching with the flood tide, I was soon cruising along at close to 7 Kts up the East coast of Chatham and Discovery Islands. It was amazing. The sun was blazing, the wind was steady and T2 was railed over and slicing through the 2' chop sending spray over the fordeck.
I decided to cruise by Margaret's Bay, where as kids my friends and I would party along with the rest of our high school cohort. There was what I thought was a small boat in my path. I decided to buzz by them but as I approached the boat looked less and less like a boat and more and more like a navigational buoy.
Fuck! it's Johnstone Reef!!!! Evasive action! Harden up and take her to Lee!
The take-away message here is to ensure the chart plotter window is super-imposed on my current GPS location. In switching to my music player and back to chart plotter, the setting was changed to allow me to navigate off the current window view. And that's exactly what I had done.
The remainder of the day was less dramatic but every bit as exciting.
