Chatham Island: first attempt
My track including two geo-tagged photos I took of the crab trap deployed
started off with very light winds.
Provisioned and ready for a day on the water
Arrived to find T2 uncomfortably close to Oliver's boat. Left buoy immediately. Dropped the crab trap and set way point. Continued on to Chatham Island, through Banes Channel.
This is the photo I took of the crab trap. This appears as photo #5 on the Navionics track
No one at Chatham so stopped engine just outside of anchorage to rig anchor. Could not restart engine. No power to the panel. Hoisted genoa and krept back through Banes. Luckily it was slack tide as there was no more than 5 kts of wind out of the North.
Checked 20 A inline fuse and found it missing. Not sure if I dropped it or never put one in there and there was enough of a spring to push the two terminals together. Had trouble with the auto-helm on the way out so suspected the fuse immediately.
Replaced fuse and engine started. Actually it started without a fuse so I don't think there was ever a fuse in the bloody holder!
Water alarm sounded and remained sounding whenever I ran the engine. Extremely aggravating. Returned to find my buoy resting against Oliver's boat. Not good. I tied up to a Yacht Club buoy and rowed over to see what I could do. Must be the secondary anchor I had placed a few days earlier.
Returned to T2 to retrieve wire cutters. Rowed back to the buoy and removed the second anchor. Buoy cleared Oliver's boat but just barely. Ran the 2nd anchor away from Oliver's boat and reattached to buoy. I had left Oliver a voice message telling him that I had run a second anchor and that he was still right on top of me. Would he consider reducing his road as he was cutting quite a swath out in the bay.
I ran out extra long mooring line in an effort to stand clear of Oliver's boat. Hope I'm not too close to the guy behind me now.
Even the damn crab was too small to keep
