Chatham Island with T and B
To Chatham and back with a stop to drop the crab trap at Sheep Bay
Friday July 11, 2014
SW 0 increased to SW 5-10 as we were leaving
Having just arrived from Europe, Barnucka agreed to spend the day with us boating. He was up at like 4 am due to his jet lag / time change. When Tania and I arrived, he was already rafted up to T2 and rowed to shore with fresh coffee. (For him, not us.)
As we were all arriving to our boats, a small zodiac pulled up bearing Barnucka's daughter, Oreilia (sp?) and unbeknown to us, her fiance Brock. She pleaded with someone at the yacht club to drop her off at her dad's boat so she could tell him she'd gotten engaged!!! Wow!
Ready and waiting to leave Cadboro Bay
Getting underway
Do you think I'm overdoing the whole pirate thing?
We left anchor at 11:30 and dropped the crab trap off en route to Chatham Island. Tania went with B on Inkla so she could catch up. Barnucka had been gone for three weeks. As there was no wind whatsoever, I suggested we raft up at Chatham Island for a picnic lunch. B dropped his hook and I came along side.
Along side Inkla at Chatham Island
The goddess waves from Barnucka's 'Inkla'. Hey what's with the traffic sign in the background?!
I love Chatham Island. I have lots of childhood memories of going there with mom and dad on the Thunderbird. We used to harvest butter clams by the bucket load. Yacht club picnics were held there, every summer. It's a truly magical place and so close. The next closest cruising destination is Roche Harbour in the American San Juan Islands. Time marches on however, and now you can't even come ashore.
Bummer. B and I plan to go ashore cause he's got some native in him. (Strongly resisting the obligatory joke from whitey)
Magical Chatham Island
We had a feast of mesquite smoked chicken, fresh grapes, apples, rice crackers and humous. Then, with a belly full of food I retired to the V-birth for a delicious afternoon nap.
On our way to check the trap and then home to the children
Too small to eat. They were merely our guests for some time.
