Maintenance
Investigated water problem. Dad had said there was a problem with the water system but he wasn't specific so I threw a few litres into the water tank. Galley tap worked as usual with the foot switch and the sink drained normally when the thru valve was opened.
Moving onto the head, there was no action with the foot switch. I removed the foot switch and the pump work normally. It turns out the switch was an on/off switch that dad had wrapped with what looked like a band aid. I'm not sure why he did that unless he was trying to improvise a momentary contact switch which is what's required to avoid leaving the pump running by accident.
I bought a couple of momentary contact switches at The Source in Sidney but they require soldering so for the time being I just re-attached the original switch. It worked. Now onto the next problem.
The sink doesn't drain and to make matters worse, it leaks. The drain fitting is loose and may require a new washer. I disconnected the drain hose from the sink and tried to blow out the obstruction with a water hose. So after I had blasted 30 years of crud from the drain hose all over the inside of the head, I set about sponging everything down.
Tom suggested I try ramming a rod through the through-hall fitting in an attempt to dislodge whatever is blocking the drain.
With little time remaining I flashed up the engine. I want to keep it running at least once a week to ensure it doesn't seize up or stop running. She started no problem and at first the water was coming through but after a short time the water stopped discharging. I revved her up and the water discharge resumed but soon stopped again.
Upon investigation, it turned out the salt water strainer was completely dry. Tom suggested the fittings that we had tried to fix last weekend and which broke free, were likely leaking air into the system and that could be the problem.
Will need to revisit the water strainer, replace hoses and cut out the electrical quick connectors in favor of terminal strips. As far as the head goes, will look at ramming a rod down the drain in an effort to clear blockage and re-connect the drain at the sink. The good news is the water system, as far as the pump goes, is working.
